Netflix has found a streaming home for The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey, a scripted limited series starring Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen as Patsy and John Ramsey.

Who Is Making the Series?

Richard LaGravenese serves as showrunner and executive producer. His previous screenwriting and directing credits include Freedom Writers, Behind the Candelabra and Netflix’s A Family Affair.

Harrison Query and Tommy Wallach co-wrote the series and are also executive producers. Other executive producers announced by Netflix include David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari and David Hutkin for 101 Studios, along with Melissa McCarthy and Anne Sewitsky.

Earlier Paramount+ production materials described the project as an eight-episode series and said Sewitsky would direct four episodes, including the premiere. Current coverage still refers to eight episodes, but Netflix’s July 2026 announcement does not restate the episode count or directing breakdown. Netflix may clarify those details closer to release.

How It Differs From Netflix’s JonBenét Ramsey Documentaries

Netflix has previously examined the case through nonfiction filmmaking. Kitty Green’s 2017 film Casting JonBenet used a highly unconventional format, following Colorado actors auditioning for roles in a proposed dramatization while discussing their own memories and theories.

The streaming service returned to the case in November 2024 with Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey. Directed by Joe Berlinger, the three-part documentary focused on the investigation, media coverage and the continuing debate over evidence in the case.

The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey takes a different approach. Instead of relying mainly on interviews, archival recordings and documentary analysis, it will use scripted scenes and performances to explore the people involved and the effect of the case on their lives.
