Netflix has released the full trailer for The East Palace, a Korean historical fantasy series built around a haunted royal residence, a threatened bloodline and two investigators with unusual connections to the dead.
The series will premiere on Netflix on July 17, 2026. Nam Joo-hyuk, Roh Yoon-seo and Cho Seung-woo lead the cast of the project, which Netflix describes as a limited series combining horror, mystery, period drama and supernatural action.
The new footage provides a much clearer look at the central mystery. A death inside the palace fuels rumors of a returning spirit, while the king turns to people capable of reaching beyond the ordinary world for help.
What The East Palace trailer confirms
The official The East Palace trailer released by Netflix begins with a crisis inside the royal family. The crown prince has been found dead in a pond, and frightened members of the court believe a spirit connected to the water has returned.
The king initially rejects the supernatural explanation. He appears determined to treat the deaths and illnesses surrounding his family as part of a human conspiracy rather than a curse.
That position becomes harder to maintain when Prince Yeongan, his remaining son, collapses. With the royal line under threat, the king secretly calls for Gu-cheon, a swordsman who can cross the boundary between the living world and the Realm of Gwi.
The trailer presents Gu-cheon’s assignment as more than a routine exorcism. He must enter the East Palace, identify the force attacking the royal household and remove the curse before it claims more lives.
What The East Palace is about
Gu-cheon possesses the ability to move between the human and spirit realms. Netflix’s official description says he also carries a blade capable of cutting down ghosts that cross too far into the world of the living.
He is not permitted to conduct the investigation alone. The king pairs him with Saeng-gang, a court lady who can hear the voices of the dead. Her ability gives the investigation a second connection to the supernatural, but she is also guarding information of her own.
The arrangement creates immediate tension. Gu-cheon needs Saeng-gang’s help to understand the spirits inside the palace, while Saeng-gang has secretly been ordered to observe him. Their growing partnership is therefore shaped by both cooperation and suspicion.
The mystery appears to lead back to the palace pond where the crown prince died. As the investigators move deeper into the royal compound, the distinction between a supernatural curse and a buried political crime becomes increasingly uncertain.
The East Palace cast and creative team
Nam Joo-hyuk plays Gu-cheon. The actor is known internationally for Korean series including Twenty Five Twenty One, Start-Up and Vigilante. His new role combines sword fighting with a character who can physically enter the world inhabited by spirits.
Roh Yoon-seo plays Saeng-gang, the court lady whose ability to hear the dead makes her essential to the investigation. Her previous Netflix credits include Crash Course in Romance and the film 20th Century Girl.
Cho Seung-woo portrays the king. The trailer shows him attempting to maintain control of the court while his family is targeted by an unexplained force. Netflix has described the king’s motives as complex, suggesting that he may know more about the palace’s history than he initially reveals.
The series is directed by Choi Jung-kyu, whose television work includes The Devil Judge and Children of Nobody. The screenplay comes from Kwon So-ra and Seo Jea-won, the writing team associated with Bulgasal: Immortal Souls and The Guest.
Those previous projects are relevant because both used horror or supernatural ideas to examine unresolved histories, personal trauma and dangerous forces that survive across generations.
When will The East Palace be released on Netflix?
The East Palace will be released on Netflix on Friday, July 17, 2026. The date appears on the streamer’s official Tudum preview, its July release schedule and the series’ Netflix title page.
Netflix currently labels the production as a limited series. An official episode total has not been displayed on the public title page, so reports giving a specific number of episodes should be treated cautiously unless Netflix confirms that information.
The program is categorized across several connected genres, including horror, television mystery, action and adventure, Korean drama and period drama. Its maturity classification may vary by country or region.
Why the series stands apart
The trailer’s strongest feature is the way it combines a royal investigation with supernatural rules drawn from a distinctly Korean setting. The palace is not simply a dramatic background. Its corridors, court hierarchy and restricted spaces appear to shape how the mystery unfolds.
The story also gives its two investigators different relationships with the dead. Gu-cheon can enter the spirit world and fight what he finds there. Saeng-gang cannot confront spirits in the same way, but she can hear the information they are trying to communicate.
That difference should allow the series to move between action, investigation and psychological horror without depending on a single type of supernatural encounter.
Some unofficial coverage has compared the production with large Western fantasy franchises. Netflix, however, has not presented The East Palace as a replacement for another show. Its confirmed premise is more specifically a Korean palace mystery involving ghosts, concealed history and a royal succession crisis.
What happens next
With the premiere approaching, Netflix has now released both a teaser and a full trailer. The complete series is expected to become available through the platform on July 17.
Questions about the origin of the pond spirit, Saeng-gang’s hidden loyalties and the king’s knowledge of the curse remain unanswered. The trailer also avoids revealing whether the danger is entirely supernatural or connected to people inside the court.
The East Palace is therefore arriving with a clearly established mystery rather than a detailed explanation of its mythology. Its combination of royal politics, spirit-world action and a central investigation gives viewers a strong idea of the tone without exposing the solution.
