Stormlight: War for Roshar Kickstarter Confirmed for Fall 2026

Fantasy strategy board with opposing armies positioned across a rocky continent beneath a powerful storm.

Brandon Sanderson’s world of Roshar is expanding again, this time through a large-scale strategy board game. Brotherwise Games has confirmed that Stormlight: War for Roshar will receive its first major public preview at Gen Con 2026 before launching on Kickstarter in the fall.

The announcement provides a firm crowdfunding window, but it does not confirm when the finished game will reach backers or stores. No official release date has been announced.

For now, the verified details point to a lengthy and comparatively complex war game built around the central conflict of The Stormlight Archive.

Stormlight: War for Roshar Kickstarter Confirmed for Fall 2026

Brotherwise Games confirmed the Kickstarter window in a July 8 announcement outlining its Gen Con 2026 plans.

The publisher said it will present the first looks at Stormlight: War for Roshar during the convention. It also described the project as an “epic war game” based on Sanderson’s bestselling fantasy series.

The important distinction is that fall 2026 marks the planned beginning of the crowdfunding campaign. Brotherwise has not said that completed copies will ship or enter retail during that period.

An exact Kickstarter launch date has also not been announced. The campaign could reveal the game’s price, editions, stretch goals and estimated fulfillment schedule, but none of those details should be treated as confirmed before Brotherwise publishes them.

What Is Stormlight: War for Roshar?

Stormlight: War for Roshar is a strategic board game centered on the wider war unfolding across Roshar. According to Dragonsteel’s official preview from December 2025, the game pits the coalition’s forces against the powers of Odium.

Dragonsteel also described it as a roughly three-hour experience. That places the project in a different category from a quick card game or an introductory family title.

It is also separate from the Cosmere Roleplaying Game. A role-playing game asks participants to create characters and tell an evolving story under the direction of a game master. A war game generally focuses more heavily on competing armies, territory, resources and strategic decisions.

Brotherwise has not yet explained which of those systems will appear in War for Roshar. The company has not officially detailed the board, turn structure, victory conditions or number of players.

How the World of Roshar Supports a Strategy Game

Roshar is the principal setting of The Stormlight Archive, a fantasy series built around nations divided by warfare, ancient powers and the return of the Knights Radiant.

Sanderson’s official series overview describes Roshar as a world of stone and storms. Its civilizations have adapted to recurring supernatural tempests, while its armies fight with conventional forces as well as Shardblades, Shardplate and magical abilities.

Those elements give the designers many possible ways to represent military conflict on a tabletop. Different nations, commanders and supernatural powers could potentially create varied strategic choices.

However, Brotherwise has not confirmed how individual characters, Knights Radiant or Roshar’s nations will function in the game. Until official rules are shown, specific mechanical interpretations remain speculation.

John D. Clair Leads the Game Design

Brotherwise’s latest announcement identifies John D. Clair as the designer of Stormlight: War for Roshar. Clair previously designed Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game, another tabletop project based on Sanderson’s Cosmere.

Dragonsteel’s 2025 report also connected Brotherwise development lead Hayden Dillard to the project. The report said the team was working to combine the tactical depth expected from a war game with an approach that Cosmere readers could understand.

No additional designers, illustrators or component artists have been formally announced. Brotherwise has also not confirmed whether the game will use miniatures, standees, cards or another system for representing its armies.

What Will Be Shown at Gen Con 2026?

Gen Con 2026 runs from July 30 through August 2 in Indianapolis. Brotherwise and Dragonsteel plan to use the convention to provide the first closer look at the game.

The official schedule includes a one-hour seminar titled “The 2026 State of Games in the Cosmere”. It is scheduled for Friday at 12 p.m. EDT and will include previews of War for Roshar, the upcoming Mistborn role-playing material and other Cosmere tabletop projects.

The event listing names Brotherwise president Johnny O’Neal, Hayden Dillard, Lyla Fujiwara and Lydia Suen among the participants. It currently shows the seminar as sold out.

Brotherwise has not specified exactly what the presentation will contain. Images of the board, early components or a rules overview are possible subjects for a first look, but they have not been promised in the public announcement.

War for Roshar Release Date, Price and Player Count

The only confirmed launch window is for the Kickstarter campaign, which is planned for fall 2026.

No official release date has been announced. Brotherwise has not published a delivery estimate, retail date, suggested price, player count or age recommendation for the finished product.

This distinction matters because a Kickstarter launch is the beginning of a crowdfunding and preorder process, not the release of a completed game. Large tabletop projects commonly require additional development, manufacturing and international shipping after their campaigns end.

The official campaign page should eventually provide clearer information about pledge levels, shipping regions, production schedules and whether a standard retail edition is planned.

Why the Announcement Matters for the Cosmere

Brotherwise and Dragonsteel have steadily expanded Sanderson’s stories beyond novels. Their growing tabletop line includes Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game, the Cosmere Roleplaying Game and Shards of Creation.

War for Roshar appears to target players looking for a deeper strategic experience. Its reported three-hour length and large-scale conflict distinguish it from the more accessible card and deck-building games in the same licensed collection.

The project may also give readers a new way to understand the geography and competing powers of Roshar. Whether it succeeds will depend on how clearly the designers translate the books’ complicated conflict into decisions that remain engaging across a long play session.

What Happens Next?

The next confirmed milestone is the Gen Con 2026 presentation. Brotherwise is expected to share further information during or after the convention, followed by the Kickstarter campaign sometime in the fall.

Until then, reports of a fall retail release, confirmed miniatures or finalized gameplay systems should be treated cautiously. The verified announcement covers the game’s designer, general premise, approximate length, Gen Con preview and Kickstarter window—and little beyond those points.

Stormlight: War for Roshar is officially moving toward crowdfunding, but many of the details that will determine its scope and accessibility are still being kept under wraps. What part of Roshar’s conflict would you most like to see represented in the game?
