David Jonsson Is the New Black Panther in Marvel’s Third Film

Marvel Studios has officially chosen David Jonsson to carry the Black Panther mantle in the franchise’s third movie.

The announcement was made during Marvel Studios’ presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, 2026. Director Ryan Coogler introduced Jonsson onstage alongside returning franchise stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke.

Marvel also confirmed that Black Panther 3 will open exclusively in theaters on December 15, 2028. Although the studio has now revealed its new leading hero, important details about the story and wider cast remain under wraps.

David Jonsson Is Marvel’s New Black Panther

David Jonsson will play the adult son of T’Challa, continuing a story that began during the final moments of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

That film revealed that T’Challa and Nakia had a young son. Nakia had been raising him in Haiti, away from the political pressures surrounding the Wakandan throne. The child introduced himself by his Haitian name, Toussaint, before revealing that his Wakandan name was T’Challa.

Marvel has not yet confirmed how much time will have passed within the story or how the character becomes the new Black Panther. The studio’s announcement establishes only that Jonsson is playing T’Challa’s son and that he will hold the Black Panther identity in the upcoming movie.

Jonsson briefly addressed the Comic-Con audience after joining the cast. He thanked the franchise team for welcoming him and said he preferred to let the finished film speak for his performance.

What Black Panther 3 Is About

Marvel Studios has not released an official plot synopsis for Black Panther 3.

Jonsson’s casting nevertheless provides the first clear indication of the movie’s central direction. The story will continue T’Challa’s family legacy through his son rather than recasting the version of the character played by Chadwick Boseman.

The younger T’Challa also enters a Wakanda that has changed significantly since his father’s death. Shuri became the Black Panther in Wakanda Forever, while M’Baku emerged as an important political leader during the film’s closing events.

How those characters respond to the arrival of an adult heir could become an important part of the sequel. However, Marvel has not confirmed a struggle for the throne, a transfer of power or any specific conflict involving the three characters.

Ryan Coogler, Letitia Wright and Winston Duke Return

Ryan Coogler is returning to direct the third film after guiding both previous Black Panther movies. His continued involvement gives the franchise creative consistency as it moves into a new generation.

Letitia Wright and Winston Duke joined Coogler and Jonsson during the official Comic-Con presentation. Disney’s announcement confirms that Wright and Duke are returning, although Marvel has not explained the size of their roles.

Wright plays Shuri, T’Challa’s sister and the hero who recreated the heart-shaped herb before becoming the Black Panther in Wakanda Forever. Duke plays M’Baku, the leader of the Jabari tribe and one of Wakanda’s most influential figures.

Their return means the new Black Panther will not enter the story without connections to the earlier films. Shuri represents his father’s immediate family, while M’Baku has developed from a political rival into a trusted defender of Wakanda.

A complete cast list has not been announced. Marvel has also not confirmed whether Lupita Nyong’o will return as Nakia or whether other established Wakandan characters will appear.

Why David Jonsson’s Casting Matters

Jonsson arrives in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after earning attention through performances in the television drama Industry and the science-fiction film Alien: Romulus. He also appeared in The Long Walk.

Playing the new Black Panther places him at the center of one of Marvel Studios’ most culturally important franchises. The original Black Panther became the first superhero movie nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and helped establish Wakanda as one of the MCU’s most recognizable settings.
