Sage Linder plays Britney, Josh’s girlfriend and Baloo’s sibling, according to Teen Vogue’s interviews with the cast and creator.

How the actors prepared for the rowing scenes

The production placed unusual emphasis on teaching the cast how rowing works. The principal actors did not begin the project with competitive rowing experience, so they completed approximately one month of physical and technical preparation before filming.

The male rowers first trained in Vancouver under Terry Paul, an Olympic gold medal-winning coxswain. Martineau later joined the group for additional training near Vancouver Island. Creator and showrunner Vivian Lin also consulted people with direct knowledge of the sport, including writer Julian Doucet and former Olympic silver medalist Anna van der Kamp.

Production used Victoria-area locations including Elk and Beaver Lake and the Gorge Waterway. Some close shots were filmed with the actors’ boat connected to a floating camera barge, while wider sequences used drones to capture the cast rowing without being towed.

Those methods allowed the production to show the physical coordination required inside a racing shell. The actors sometimes spent eight to 10 hours on the water while filming the racing sequences.

Vivian Lin leads the creative team

Crew Girl is run by Vivian Lin, whose television credits include SkyMed, The Lake and Killjoys. Lin developed the original premise with writer Morwyn Brebner, and the two worked together on the pilot.

Lin also serves as an executive producer alongside Jeff Norton, Lindsay Macadam, Hillary Zwick Turner, Tony Chung and Lori Massini. Netflix’s current credits identify Blue Ant Studios executives and producers among the team behind the series.

On his official website, Norton identified Simon Barry, Jacquie Gould, Norman Buckley, Amanda Tapping, Adam Kane and Alysse Leite-Rogers as directors who worked on the first season.

Production began in British Columbia in September 2025 and wrapped that December. Although the series was made primarily with Canadian talent, its story is set in the United States. Lin has explained that Easton Prep was inspired by elite Massachusetts schools connected to the highly competitive world of college admissions.

Why Crew Girl could stand apart from other teen dramas

Rowing gives the familiar prep-school drama a less familiar sporting environment. Every athlete in a racing shell depends on the others to move at the same pace, while the coxswain must establish authority without physically pulling an oar. That structure naturally supports a story about leadership, trust and conflicting ambitions.

The series also uses the team to examine differences in wealth and opportunity. Josh comes from a family closely connected to Easton Prep, while Cam views rowing as a possible route toward education and a different future. Lin conceived Teagan as an Asian American lead, and Japanese Canadian actor Martineau has spoken about the importance of seeing an actor of Asian heritage at the center of this kind of young-adult drama. The first season will also give Ella a life beyond her role as Teagan’s mother. Her return to the community where she grew up brings her into contact with people and unresolved relationships from her past, including Coach Hayden.
