The Beach Read movie has moved beyond casting and development: filming is officially underway.

Phoebe Dynevor and Patrick Schwarzenegger are leading the adaptation of Emily Henry’s 2020 romance novel, with writer-director Yulin Kuang bringing the story to the screen for 20th Century Studios. The film is currently scheduled to reach theaters on May 7, 2027.

The production update gives readers the clearest picture yet of an adaptation that was first announced several years ago. Although many creative and casting details remain private, its two central characters, director and theatrical release date are now confirmed.

The Beach Read movie has started filming

Yulin Kuang announced in June 2026 that filming had officially begun. She shared a behind-the-scenes image from a camera test featuring Dynevor and Schwarzenegger as January Andrews and Augustus “Gus” Everett.

Kuang also confirmed that the movie is intended exclusively for theaters when it opens on May 7, 2027. That date is one week earlier than the May 14 date mentioned in some previous reporting.

The start of principal photography is an important step for the project. It means the adaptation has progressed from screenplay development and casting into active production, although the studio has not announced when filming will finish.

What is Beach Read about?

Beach Read follows two writers who approach life, love and fiction from very different directions.

January Andrews is a successful romance novelist struggling with grief, family revelations and a severe case of writer’s block. While staying in her late father’s house in a Michigan beach community, she discovers that her neighbor is Gus Everett, a former college rival known for writing darker literary fiction.

Both authors need to complete new books, so they agree to exchange genres. January will attempt to write serious literary fiction, while Gus must create a story with a happier ending. They also design research assignments for each other, pushing both writers outside their familiar creative worlds.

The arrangement begins as a professional challenge, but their rivalry gradually becomes more personal. Beneath the romantic premise, Henry’s novel deals with grief, disappointment, family secrets and the stories people tell themselves about love.

The town of North Bear Shores is fictional. On her official website, Henry explains that she drew inspiration from several western Michigan communities, including Saugatuck, Holland and Grand Haven.

Phoebe Dynevor and Patrick Schwarzenegger lead the cast

Phoebe Dynevor plays January Andrews. Dynevor became internationally known through her role as Daphne Bridgerton in Netflix’s Bridgerton and later earned praise for her performance in the financial thriller Fair Play.

Patrick Schwarzenegger stars opposite her as Gus Everett. His recent television work includes a major role in the third season of HBO’s The White Lotus.

Dynevor publicly discussed joining the adaptation during a June 2026 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. The camera-test photograph later released by Kuang offered the first official glimpse of the actors together in character.

Schwarzenegger’s casting generated disagreement among some readers who felt that he did not resemble their interpretation of Gus. Kuang explained that the filmmakers focused heavily on the relationship between the two leads and their chemistry during the casting process.

Henry has also encouraged readers to allow the filmmakers’ interpretation to unfold. Rather than promising a page-for-page copy of the novel, her comments recognize that a screen adaptation becomes the work of a larger creative team.

No complete supporting cast has been officially announced. Any additional names circulating without confirmation should therefore be treated cautiously.

Yulin Kuang is writing and directing

Yulin Kuang is adapting Henry’s novel and directing the finished film. Her involvement gives the project a filmmaker with experience in contemporary romance and literary adaptations.

Kuang was also one of the screenwriters behind Netflix’s adaptation of Henry’s People We Meet on Vacation. In addition to her screen work, she is the author of the romance novel How to End a Love Story.

Henry previously said that Kuang’s screenplay took a bold approach she had not expected. That does not reveal what has been changed from the novel, but it suggests that the movie may reinterpret parts of the story rather than reproduce every scene exactly.

20th Century Studios is releasing the film. Original Film is involved as a producer, continuing its work on commercially focused studio features.

When will the Beach Read movie be released?

The Beach Read movie is scheduled to open in theaters on May 7, 2027.

The date was announced after production began, making it more reliable than older articles that listed the project without a release schedule. Release calendars can still change, especially while a movie remains in production, but May 7 is the current confirmed date.

No streaming date or home-release plan has been announced. The filmmakers’ announcement emphasized a theatrical debut, so reports assigning the movie to a subscription streaming service are unsupported at this stage.

A trailer has not yet been released, and there is no confirmed date for the first footage. Marketing will probably reveal more about the supporting cast, locations and the adaptation’s visual approach, but no timetable has been made public.

Why this adaptation matters

Beach Read helped establish Emily Henry as one of the most recognizable names in contemporary romantic fiction. Its appeal comes not only from the central relationship but also from its examination of creativity, loss and the divide between so-called literary and commercial storytelling.

That combination presents an interesting challenge for the film. The novel relies heavily on January’s perspective and on the private emotional lives of two authors. Kuang must translate those internal struggles into dialogue, performance and visual storytelling while preserving the romantic tension between the leads.

The film is also part of a larger group of Emily Henry adaptations. Henry’s official website lists Book Lovers, Happy Place and Funny Story among the books being developed for film, following the screen adaptation of People We Meet on Vacation.

Each project is being developed separately, and there has been no announcement that the films will form a connected cinematic universe.

What happens next?

The next reliable updates are likely to include supporting-cast announcements, confirmation that principal photography has finished, and the first official images or trailer.

For now, the central facts are clear: Phoebe Dynevor is playing January, Patrick Schwarzenegger is playing Gus, Yulin Kuang is writing and directing, and filming has begun for a planned May 7, 2027 theatrical release.
