Netflix has officially expanded its partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, confirming that all future Sony theatrical releases will stream exclusively on Netflix worldwide. The updated agreement marks a major shift from the previous US focused deal and positions Netflix as the global Pay 1 home for Sony’s film slate.
The original agreement, signed in 2021, made Netflix the first streaming destination for Sony movies in the United States only. While it boosted Netflix’s movie lineup, international audiences were left waiting or relying on other platforms. That is now set to change.
A Truly Global Sony And Netflix Partnership
Under the new deal, Netflix will receive exclusive Pay 1 streaming rights for Sony Pictures films across all territories. This includes releases from Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Classics, Screen Gems, and TriStar Pictures.
Movies will begin streaming on Netflix shortly after their physical and digital home releases. This window is typically between three and six months following availability on Blu ray, DVD, and digital platforms. Once released, titles will remain on Netflix for approximately eighteen months, consistent with the current US agreement.
The rollout will begin later this year and expand gradually as existing licensing agreements in different countries expire. Netflix expects the deal to be fully global by early 2029.
How Long Will The Deal Last
The current Sony Netflix agreement in the United States runs from 2022 through 2027 and was previously extended to Germany and several Southeast Asian markets. Industry expectations suggest that the newly expanded global deal will also span five years once fully implemented.
Major Sony Movies Headed To Netflix
Sony and Netflix have already confirmed several high profile titles that will be included under the new agreement. These upcoming releases highlight the scale and ambition of the partnership:
-
The Nightingale, an adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s bestselling novel starring Dakota and Elle Fanning
-
Buds, an upcoming animated feature
-
Spider Man Beyond the Spider Verse, concluding the acclaimed animated trilogy
-
Sam Mendes’ ambitious four film project centered on The Beatles
With blockbuster franchises, prestige projects, and animated features all included, the deal significantly strengthens Netflix’s future movie lineup.
What This Means For Netflix Subscribers
For global Netflix users, this agreement removes regional barriers and delays that have long frustrated movie fans. Instead of staggered releases across platforms, Sony’s biggest theatrical films will now arrive on Netflix in a consistent and predictable window worldwide.
As more details emerge about specific release dates and regional rollouts, Netflix is expected to provide regular updates throughout the year.
