🔥 The Family Plan Franchise Is Back on Top
Mark Wahlberg is kicking off the holiday season with a massive streaming win. The Family Plan 2 has exploded onto Apple TV’s global charts, debuting at #1 worldwide for November 23, 2025 — with the original film sitting right behind it at #2.
The sequel’s domination is nearly universal: it’s ranked #1 in every market but two.
-
In Laos, the original Family Plan holds the top spot.
-
In Turkmenistan, Highest 2 Lowest from Spike Lee and Denzel Washington edges ahead.
Not a bad spread for a franchise that critics once wrote off.
🎬 A Franchise Built on Global Popularity
Wahlberg returns as Dan, the suburban dad with a not-so-suburban secret: he’s actually a retired assassin whose quiet family life keeps getting blown apart by his deadly past.
The first Family Plan (released December 2023) was a runaway hit for AppleTV+, becoming the streamer’s most-watched movie ever at the time.
It was eventually overtaken by George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s Wolfs, but now, with Family Plan 2, the Wahlberg-led franchise is making a serious push to reclaim its streaming throne.
🍿 Critics Hate It — Audiences Don’t Care
Despite the franchise’s impressive popularity, critics remain overwhelmingly unimpressed:
-
The Family Plan — 27% Rotten Tomatoes
-
The Family Plan 2 — 15% Rotten Tomatoes (and dropping)
ScreenRant’s review is especially brutal, calling the sequel:
“Mind-numbingly boring and unfunny… an experience akin to watching a two-hour credit card commercial.”
Ouch.
But clearly, audiences are ignoring the critics and streaming it in massive numbers anyway.
🌍 Bigger, Wilder, and More Chaotic
For the sequel, the family heads to Europe — a classic comedy move straight out of the Vacation playbook. Their Paris getaway quickly turns into an international disaster when Dan’s violent past resurfaces.
New additions to the cast include:
-
Kit Harington, playing a mysterious antagonist who challenges Wahlberg in one of the film’s centerpiece action sequences:
a full-on fight atop a moving double-decker bus.
Wahlberg described the scene’s behind-the-scenes chaos:
“The fight was choreographed for a flat floor. Then you add a moving bus where the driver can’t see you… We couldn’t anticipate braking or turns. It wasn’t exactly well thought out.”
The cast walked away with bruises — but no major injuries.
📈 A Streaming Juggernaut
Despite critical disdain and chaotic production stories, The Family Plan 2 is undeniably crushing it on Apple TV.
The franchise now holds the #1 and #2 spots simultaneously, proving once again that:
➡️ In the streaming era, popularity doesn’t care about reviews… especially when Mark Wahlberg is punching people on a moving bus.
Stay tuned for more updates on Apple TV’s biggest hits and the future of the Family Plan universe.
