Sydney Sweeney’s Underrated True-Crime Thriller Eden Finally Gets a Second Chance on Streaming

🎬 A Box Office Bomb Turned Streaming Success

Sydney Sweeney’s survival thriller Eden is getting another shot at redemption — this time on Netflix. While the film’s theatrical failure was widely pinned on Sweeney, she was far from the main reason behind its flop. In fact, she only appeared in a supporting role.

Despite a staggering $50 million budget, Eden managed to earn just $2 million worldwide, making it one of the most notable box office disasters of the decade. Unfortunately for Sweeney, the backlash came during a rough streak that included Madame Web, Americana, and more recently, the sports drama Christy, which also underperformed.

But in a surprising turn, Eden has found new life on streaming. The thriller surged to major success on Prime Video over the last few weeks, fueled by viewer curiosity — or perhaps genuine appreciation. Now, it’s headed to an even bigger platform: Netflix, where it will debut next month.

🌴 The Film

Directed by Oscar-winner Ron Howard, Eden features a star-studded ensemble:

Ironically, several cast members have also faced recent box office setbacks:

  • Ana de Armas’ Ballerina — her big turn as a franchise lead — struggled commercially.

  • Vanessa Kirby’s role in The Fantastic Four: First Steps coincided with disappointing numbers.

  • Jude Law’s last two releases also fell short at the box office.

📝 Mixed Reviews — But Intriguing Premise

Based on the true story of a German couple who escaped during World War I to establish a colony in the Galápagos Islands, Eden was met with mixed reviews upon release.

  • Rotten Tomatoes: 57%

  • Critics Consensus: “A cohesive theme gets marooned in Eden’s melodramatic dramatization of a colorful true story, but it does provide a starry cast and salacious thrills as compensation.”

Collider’s Ross Bonaime praised Ron Howard for stepping outside his comfort zone, calling the stylistic shift “exciting” and well-suited to the veteran director.

📅 Release Info

  • Streaming Now: Prime Video

  • Coming to Netflix: December 23

If Eden continues its current streaming momentum, Netflix may finally give the film the wide audience it never reached in theaters.

Stay tuned for more updates on Eeden and other major releases!
